Art Things: Remi Rough

Remi Rough’s monochrome 3D line sketches caught my eye immediately at The Dulwich Outdoor Gallery pop up (Dulwich Village) . His other kaleidoscopic line frames took me back to the graphics on my dad’s old Technics sound system equaliser. Anything that sparks that kind of nostalgia can keep my attention.

Remi Rough is an abstract street artist from Peckham, London. I’d noticed his mural ‘Girl At Window’ (collaboration with  Jason System) at Vale End a few times, gallery folk (forgot their names) explained that the mural is based on Rembrandt’s version of the painting by the same name.

Rough studied graphic design and started out as a graffiti artist, you can see influences of both in his street and gallery works today. He is now a global street and gallery artist on display from the UK to Gambia and the US

Much of Rough’s work features brightly coloured block style lines and play with geometric shapes from abstract perspectives. Reminds me of 80s-90s graffiti that your parents wanted washed off but you secretly loved and would try and copy for your blank cassette covers.

The Dulwich Outdoor Gallery invites artists to produce street art mural versions of traditional paintings. My favourite is Fight Club by Conor Harrington- more on him later at some point
